The 12 combined use of lidar and radar instruments to measure forest structure attributes such as height and biomass at global 13 scales is being considered for a future Earth Observation satellite missions. Large footprint lidar makes a direct 14 measurement of the distance of canopy scattering elements (i.e., leaves, branches, ground) within the illuminated area 15 and can yield accurate information about the vertical profile of the canopy within these lidar. Synthetic Aperture Radar 16 (SAR) is known to sense the forest canopy volume, especially at longer radar wavelengths and provides image data. 17 Methods for biomass mapping by a combination of lidar sampling and radar mapping need to be developed since neither 18 can do the whole job individually. 19

Vertical Forest Sructure Estimation by Means of Multi-baseline Pol-insar at L-band for Global Biomass Mapping Potential & Lidar Synergies
A central parameter of the terrestrial carbon budget is forest biomass which represents a proxy for the stored carbon. Despite its crucial role in the terrestrial carbon budget, forest biomass is poorly quantified across most parts of the planet due to the great difficulties in measuring biomass on the ground and consistently aggregating measurements across scales. Today’s information is largel...

متن کاملEstimation of Forest Structural Parameters from Lidar and Sar Data
Vegetation spatial structure including plant height, biomass, vertical and horizontal heterogeneity, is an important factor influencing the exchanges of matter and energy between landscape and atmosphere, and the biodiversity of ecosystems. Regional and global forest biomass and forest structure estimation is essential for understanding and monitoring ecosystem responses to human activities and...
متن کاملMapping tropical forest biomass with radar and spaceborne LiDAR in Lopé National Park, Gabon: overcoming problems of high biomass and persistent cloud
Spatially-explicit maps of aboveground biomass are essential for calculating the losses and gains in forest carbon at a regional to national level. The production of such maps across wide areas will become increasingly necessary as international efforts to protect primary forests, such as the REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation) mechanism, come into effect, along...
